The Dragon belongs to Chen ่พฐ, the 5th of the Twelve Earthly Branches. Wu Shi lists eleven of the familiar animals but omits the Dragon from that particular enumeration. Elsewhere in Lun Heng, Yan Du explicitly states that Chen ่พฐ is the Dragon, supplying the missing correspondence. This historical calendrical identity is kept separate from the modern personality and archetype layers that appear later in the SAGE reading.
