The Monkey belongs to Shen 申, the 9th of the Twelve Earthly Branches. Lun Heng's Wu Shi pairs Shen 申 with the Monkey and later refers to the monkey in the passage's Metal relationship argument. This historical calendrical identity is kept separate from the modern personality and archetype layers that appear later in the SAGE reading.
