How the Twelve Were Chosen
Long ago, the Jade Emperor decided to create a way to measure time. He summoned all the creatures of Earth to a race across a mighty river. The first twelve to reach the other side would each have a year named in their honor, forming a cycle that would last forever.
The Rat and Ox rose before dawn. As they reached the river, the Rat, small and clever, jumped onto the Ox's back. The strong Ox swam steadily across, never feeling the tiny passenger. Just before reaching the shore, the Rat leaped from the Ox's ear and dashed to the Emperor's feet, winning first place. The Ox, noble and uncomplaining, took second.
The Tiger and Rabbit came next — fierce and fast, competitive yet graceful. The Dragon arrived fifth, so magnificent that the Emperor immediately noticed him. The Snake, clever and subtle, claimed sixth by declaring the Dragon his adoptive father.
The Horse and Goat arrived together, each so kind and modest that they insisted the other go first. The Emperor, moved by their courtesy, ranked them seventh and eighth. The Monkey swung through trees and leaped across stones to claim ninth. Last came the Rooster, Dog, and Pig — each completing the sacred circle of twelve.
And so the zodiac was born — twelve animals, twelve years, one eternal cycle. The Rat's cunning, the Ox's strength, the Tiger's courage, the Rabbit's grace, the Dragon's majesty, the Snake's wisdom, the Horse's freedom, the Goat's artistry, the Monkey's cleverness, the Rooster's pride, the Dog's loyalty, and the Pig's generosity — all woven into the fabric of time itself.
